Julie Petrynko, MC

Registered Clinical Counsellor

My name is Julie Petrynko and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors and the founder of Peak Experience Counselling. 


I feel very lucky to be able to enjoy an incredibly fulfilling career. For the last 15 years I have worked as an educator and counsellor, developing my skills in connecting and guiding others. I have enjoyed working with children, youth, families, couples and individuals through private practice work and through working in the public school system. 

It is my true pleasure and passion to connect with and guide individual adults and youth and couples in working through challenges and towards growth. Our time spent together will be safe, confidential experiences where we work collaboratively, with compassion and curiosity, to meet your needs. 

My approach is very open and accepting.  No matter what you are struggling with or how taboo you feel your concerns, you will find that I am an accepting and non-judgmental listener and support.  I strive to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing and exploring.

Sara Place, MA

Registered Clinical Counsellor


My name is Sara Place and I am a Registered Clinical counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counselors and co-owner of Peak Experience Counselling in Squamish.

I am grateful to have had a career path which has allowed me to work in the fields of mental health and education, supporting children, youth, and families in various roles over the years.  I have worked in the education system for 15 years, many of which have been in a school with a mental health focus.  This experience led me to pursue my Clinical Counseling Masters and find a balance of private and public work.  I am available to work with individuals, families, couples and groups

It is my honour to deeply listen and support your personal journey through whatever life circumstance brings you to counselling.  I value your individual experience, and my approach to counselling will be personalized - with your identity, expertise, and goals as the driving force of our sessions. 

In sessions with me you can be assured of a feeling a sense of safety, confidentiality, belonging, and acceptance.  

Shayna Sander

Registered Clinical Counsellor


My name is Shayna Sander and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors.


I have worked in the area of mental health and wellness for many years as a running coach, yoga teacher, youth worker and now as a clinical counsellor. In addition to private practice, I also work as a counsellor for Yúustway Health & Wellness, for Squamish Nation in the Squamish Valley. I love the work that I do, and I feel very lucky and privileged to be trusted with the personal stories, struggles, and triumphs of my clients.


Therapy looks really different for each person, because the client takes the wheel. I’m simply the navigator. We will work together collaboratively to establish what your expectations and goals are for the counselling process and how we can move towards them. It’s important to me that clients walk away from sessions feeling like they have gained something, maybe a new skill/tool to use in life, increased insight and knowledge; or maybe walking away feeling lighter, having left something behind that is no longer useful.


I draw from a range of different counselling theories including cognitive behaviour therapy, narrative therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, body oriented therapies, and mindfulness and meditation.


Many of my clients are youth and young adults experiencing depression and anxiety, addiction or problematic substance use, difficulties with self-esteem and identity, and issues with close relationships.


I also specialize in postpartum depression and anxiety, and work with individuals and couples who are looking for support as they navigate the transition to parenthood. I support individuals and couples who have experienced traumatic pregnancy, traumatic birth, infertility, pregnancy loss and infant loss.


I take great care to create a safe, confidential space and to ensure that my practices are trauma informed, culturally sensitive.

Colleen Felgate

Registered Clinical Counsellor


My name is Colleen and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor through the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. I am also a specialized yoga and Pilates instructor who has taught a variety of styles, including several Yoga Teacher Trainings, for 20 years.

I am best known for my ability to be inclusive, compassionate and adaptive while I strive to help others to face their challenges. When appropriate, I incorporate my yoga background into my therapeutic style by teaching mindfulness skills, breath work, and meditation techniques.

I have training in many therapeutic styles including Solution Focused, Person Centered, Narrative and Trauma informed approaches. I am also comfortable with Attachment-Theory based approaches which I use to inform my work with individuals, couples and families.

My primary areas of practice include depression, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, relationships, couples, self-esteem, women’s issues, communications issues, eating disorders and chronic pain. To expand my toolbox, I am currently training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Behavioural treatment and Somatic Experiencing techniques. 

I strongly believe in a collaborative approach, creating a safe and secure alliance while developing the ideal treatment plan to meet the needs of each client.

Tiffani Van Buckley, MA

Registered Clinical Counsellor


Tiffani is an experienced individual, couples, adolescent and family therapist. Tiffani works from Gestalt and Buddhist Psychology perspectives and is always mindful of research proven best practices for any given issue.


Gestalt therapy focuses on increased self-awareness through “being with what is” in the moment (thoughts/feelings/sensations) which leads to better understanding and contact with self in order to engage in life and relationships with a greater sense of awareness and confidence. The knowing that comes from this therapeutic experience can guide the client to make choices in their life that are more congruent and authentic to them, and therefore more satisfying and fulfilling.


Buddhist Psychology and Mindfulness are incorporated to decrease suffering and increase coping.


Tiffani offers intensive, experiential and collaborative therapy that is insight and personal growth driven.

Mark Choi, MSW

Registered Social Worker


Mark is an experienced individual and family counsellor who specializes in working with youth and young adults coping with social and emotional challenges, mental health and/or substance use concerns.  He takes a client-centred approach and believes the counselling relationship is a unique partnership that needs to build on the client’s intrinsic strengths.  This process leads clients to experience empowerment, build resilience and learn to take control of their own lives.

Mark has worked as a Prevention Educator and Therapist for the past 13 years with Vancouver Coastal Health on various mental health and substance abuse teams.  He has his Masters in Social Work and is a Registered Social Worker with both the BC College of Social Workers and BC Association of Social Workers.  Mark’s strength is building rapport with individuals of all ages, identities and life situations.  He takes a non-judgmental and empathetic approach in getting to know his clients.  

Mark’s understanding of present-day trends around anxiety and depression, substance use, social media, peer relationships, self harm, and family conflict allow him to support youth (and their families) by truly meeting them where they are.

Mark enjoys working with youth 13 years of age and older, families, and individuals.


Deciding to seek the support of a counsellor can be a difficult choice to make and even more difficult to carry through with.  This is why our primary goal is to create a space and situation that feels comfortable and safe.  The relationship that develops between you and your counsellor is very unique and built on trust, acceptance, complete non-judgement, and understanding. We encourage you to make an appointment or phone consultation to help decide for yourself if counselling is right for you at this time in your life.


Some individuals like to dive into the process and some are more cautious.   We encourage people who are interested in coming in for counselling, but are feeling cautious, to text, call or email to arrange a free 20 minute phone consultation.  Contact numbers for all counsellors are found below. The consultation is a chance for you to test the waters and ask yourself, “is this someone I feel comfortable talking with?”  In this conversation you can begin to share a bit about yourself and what you are struggling with. You may also feel free to ask questions.  After this conversation, if you feel you would like to continue, we will set up a time for your first full session.  It is our strong belief that finding a counsellor that you feel in harmony with is essential for you to fully benefit from the counselling process and if you do not sense the right fit then we will happily support and encourage your continued search for a better match.


If you do decide to continue after the phone consultation or if you decide from the get go that you would like to begin with the first full hour long session, then the first step is for your counsellor to start understanding you as a person and also develop an understanding of what you would like to get out of the counselling process. You might want to use the time and space to process current stresses or losses or to understand patterns in your life.  You may want to focus on building skills in coping with life events or you may want to build healthier relationships with your partner or family members.  Or you might not have a clear idea of what you would like to focus on and that is great too! Whatever objectives (or not) you hold, we will help guide you in defining and meeting them.

Our work as counsellors is informed by several theoretical frameworks, but above all else, we understand that each person is unique and wants to achieve something unique, so we approach each person with gentle curiosity to help understand this uniqueness and support the desired change and growth. Together, you and your counsellor will figure out what works best for you and help you to find what you are seeking whether it is relief, clarity, deeper understanding, or personal growth.



In Squamish, we are located in The Galleries Building at 41105 Tantalus Road in unit 122. Our space is near the north end of the building and visitor parking is available in the lot or on the street out front. In Vancouver we are located in the lovely community of Mount Pleasant. Our address is 3140 Main Street, near the northeast corner of Main at 16th Avenue. We also have a second Vancouver location at 3223 Main Street near the southwest corner of Main at 16th Avenue. Please check with your counsellor to confirm which location your appointment will take place. At both Vancouver locations, we share a space with our friends at Mount Pleasant Massage Therapy. There is plenty of street parking close by, the #3 bus stops right out front. There is a bike rack out front as well.


Sessions are 60 minutes long. Please be on time so we can get the most out of our time.


The number of sessions depends on you.  Many people come to counselling with a specific issue they want to tackle and once they are feeling relief or more able to cope, they discontinue. Other's make counselling an ongoing part of their health regimen. 


You do not need to prepare anything.  Many people like to keep a counselling journal where they note changes, observations or challenges between sessions and also use it as a place to record the gems that come up during session that he or she would like to hold onto when the session is over.


This is also your choice and somewhat dependent on what you are seeking guidance with.  However, it is recommended that in most cases, at the beginning of the process, once per week or every two weeks is sufficient.  Leaving too much time between sessions can lead to the loss of momentum and motivation.  Therapy is like exercise in that progress will become more obvious if we take part regularly.  However, it is also beneficial to leave at least a few days between sessions so that you have time to digest the work that has been done and give it a chance to play out in life outside of the counselling room.


Counselling fees are $125/session for individuals, $135 for relationship and family counselling. All rates are subject to 5% GST. Please note that fees will be increasing by $10 in March 2020 to keep in accordance with the guidelines of our professional association. Fees may vary slightly from counsellor to counsellor depending on experience and specialized training.


You may pay by cash, e-transfer, cheque, credit card or debit. 


Counselling offered by Registered Clinical Counsellors and/or Registered Social Workers is often covered through extended medical plans.  Please check with your medical plan to see if you are covered.  A receipt with your counsellor's registration number will be provided for reimbursement. Direct billing for counselling is not an option yet in BC.


What is spoken about is definitely confidential.  Establishing an environment of safety where you can share absolutely anything is a priority.  There is nothing that you can share, no matter how taboo or “abnormal” you, or society, feel it is, that we will not listen to and unconditionally accept non-judgementally.  We approach our work with open-minded curiosity and respect.  This being said, there are rare situations in which confidentiality cannot be guaranteed and these will be discussed at the beginning of the first session.


We have training, education and experience in many different theories and approaches. We are happy to explain more about this in person or over the phone. It is one of our strongest beliefs that since everyone is unique, it is necessary that we borrow from many different theorists and utilize many different approaches depending on what feels like a best fit for an individual’s needs.  But, no matter what approaches we use, we believe that the therapeutic relationship that is developed with each client is the most vital component of success in counselling. If you cannot make it to a session, please cancel at least 24 hours ahead of time.  There are a limited number of appointment spaces available in a week and there are likely others who would like to use your appointment time.  However, it is difficult to fill the space within 24 hours of cancelling, so our policy is to charge the full price of a session for missed appointments or appointments that are cancelled within 24 hours of the appointment time.
