What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is based on the understanding that experiences, especially stress and trauma, don’t just live in the mind. They’re also stored in the body. It draws on the concept of the mind-body connection or the idea that mental and physical states constantly influence each other.

Therapeutic options that utilize this understanding can be incredibly helpful in moving and healing emotional stress and trauma by focusing on the physical. Some options offered at Peak Experience are:

The best selling book "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk, highlights that "if the memory of trauma is encoded in our senses, in muscle tension, and in anxiety, then the body must also be involved in the healing process.” “Once you start approaching your body with curiosity rather than with fear, everything shifts.”

Somatic based therapies are often utilized for supporting those struggling with:

  • trauma (Big T or little t)

  • anxiety

  • grief and loss

  • depression

  • fear of vulnerability

  • self esteem

"The person in peak-experiences feels their self, more than other times, like a prime-mover, more self-determined. They feel their self to be their own boss, fully responsible, fully volitional, with more "free-will" than at other times, master of their fate, an agent."

~Abraham Maslow, Toward a Psychology of Being, 1968
